The heat holds on well past October, and it usually isn’t until closer to Thanksgiving that the air actually cools and the color starts to show up. Once it does, you get warm, layered tones and comfortable temperatures that make outdoor sessions easy again. A few practical things worth planning around are timing, temperature, and colors.

  • Early fall can still run hot, sometimes into the 90s, so we’ll plan your session around cooler parts of the day and pick outfits that hold up either way.
  • Days get shorter as the season goes on, so golden hour starts creeping earlier, which works in our favor for softer, warmer light.

Real fall in Central Texas runs later than most places. The heat often holds on through October, and true color usually doesn’t peak until late November into early December. A few trees start earlier, Mexican plum and flameleaf sumac can turn as early as late October, but if you’re picturing full color across the board, plan for that later window. I’d recommend reaching out at least a few months ahead. Fall is my busiest season overall, since it overlaps with homecoming and football season for seniors, plus holiday card season for families, so calendars fill up fast from both directions. The peak color window itself only lasts about two to four weeks once it starts, which adds even more pressure on dates if that’s part of your vision.

We’ll keep an eye on the forecast together and reschedule if needed. Texas spring weather can be unpredictable, so I always build in some flexibility. Seniors have 3 months of availability to reschedule if we’re rained out.

Warm tones work beautifully once the color turns, think rust, olive, cream, and deep berry. Layers are still smart early in the season since it can run warmer in Texas.

Early fall sessions can still run hot here, so I plan around the cooler parts of the day, usually early morning or closer to sunset, and pick locations with some shade built in. We’ll also talk through fabrics that breathe well so you’re comfortable even if the thermometer hasn’t caught up to the calendar yet.
