If you want your senior photos to feel like the real Texas like wide-open fields, an old barn, and water views then Commons Ford Ranch is the spot! It’s got that rustic, lived-in ranch charm that’s hard to find this close to Austin, with enough variety to shoot a whole session without leaving the park.

Why Seniors Love Commons Ford Ranch
From a Photographer’s Perspective
This location is all texture — the barn wood, the rock steps, the fence line, even the well-worn volleyball net all add character you just can’t fake. Pair that with the cypress trees along the water and the dock view of the Colorado River, and there’s a real variety of backdrops packed into one session without having to drive anywhere else.
A few things to keep in mind:
- It’s a popular spot — you’ll likely see other photographers and portrait sessions out there too, so it can feel busy. So if privacy is important for your comfort, you may want to consider a weekday or another location.
- Free park parking is available along the street. (score!)
- The best spots (the dock, the barn) are a bit of a walk from parking, so plan for a few extra minutes to get there.
- The only bathrooms on site are porta potties.
- The lot can fill up fast, especially on weekends.

Best time to shoot here
Golden hour is always the move here, and if you can swing it, November through December is when the fall color really makes the whole park glow.
Pro Tip:
Give yourself a few extra minutes when we meet — the dock and the barn are a walk in from the parking lot, not right next to your car.
What to know about Planning Your Senior Session at Commons Ford Ranch Park
There’s no website or official contact… this is just a public park space I’ve scouted and used often. But here’s what you’ll need to know:
What to wear for your senior session at Commons Ford Ranch Park
When choosing your wardrobe, I suggest selecting neutral colors and styles that complement the natural colors found in nature. This will help you stand out and create a more dynamic look in your photos. Colors I would stay away from would be green, so you don’t blend in to the background, hot pink or any neon colors because the contrast can feel jarring, and pure black or white. I highly recommend Red, burnt orange, rust, brown, and cream which all play beautifully against the rustic tones.
