In Texas, we all know the power of the bluebonnets. They are usually the first sign of spring and we all love to get family photos in the fields of beautiful blue flowers. But spring is more than just flowers. It’s longer evenings… It’s kids who don’t want to go back inside… dirt, wind, snacks, noise, and that shift in temperature where everything feels a little more alive again.
If flowers are your thing…
I get it! I love bluebonnets too and we can absolutely do that. But if the timing doesn’t work, or your kids aren’t into it, or the flowers aren’t having a good bloom year, here are other ideas for spring family photos that aren’t flowers.
1. Splashing in Puddles
As the old saying goes April showers bring May flowers. Spring has all kinds of weather and some of that means rain. And every time it does, my kids are quick to ask if they can go outside and play in the rain.
I know that it can feel a little harder to plan an exact day when you’re waiting on rainy weather, but I am open to planning around a weather event like rain that could make for a fun family event to capture.

2. Feeding ducks and birds
Tossing food, watching the ducks and pigeons gather, spotting turtles in the water… it’s one of those easy outdoor spring activities that kids naturally get into without much direction.
My top recommended location in Austin for feeding the ducks, birds, turtles, or whatever else you find is Mueller Lake Park.
3. Outdoor Family Picnic

4. Play with Bubbles
One of the simplest activities that your kids will absolutely love is bubbles! Even with older kids bubbles are a hit so don’t let age be a factor. Not to mention they make for some really unique family photos.
5. Play At The Park
If your family loves the park, spring is a great time to get out and play together. I can make recommendations for different parks and playgrounds for your family to explore together that aren’t all that populated for your family sessions also. The best family photos are built on a healthy connection and playing together is a great way to capture that feeling.
