Where To Take Rooftop Portraits in Austin, Texas

Three Locations to Take Rooftop Photos in Austin

Rooftop photos are such a vibe and my senior clients love this location option! The biggest issue here is knowing where to go because so many rooftops have security personnel that will tell you to skedaddle. There are a ton of locations that have free or low cost access to a rooftop for the skyline views, but there are three that are consistently used for photos in Austin.

1. Rooftop Photoshoot at the Long Center in Austin, Texas

For Katie’s senior pictures, we started out at the Long Center and walked around to utilize the surrounding nature. From there we made our way to the area on the pavilion with Austin’s beautiful skyline. On the way to the rooftop we stopped because, like me, Katie’s favorite color is purple and we found a gorgeous purple wall! Don’t you love it when little things like that come together by chance? Perfection! Katie had requested to do some photos with her car on the rooftop and she absolutely understood the assignment. It was one of those session that made me feel so, so grateful to be a senior photographer in Austin, Texas.

Where to park at the Long Center for Performing Arts

You can park in the actual garage, but there is a fee. You can also park across the road at Vic Mathias Shores for free, but you may have to wait for a spot to open up because it’s a popular free parking lot. Don’t forget that this is a performing arts venue and may have events that would not be ideal times for a photoshoot.

Senior Film in Austin, Texas at The Long Center for Performing Arts

In addition to the photoshoot, I shot a film for Katie’s senior photo shoot and it was so much fun to create!

2. Rooftop Pictures at the 2nd Street Garage

Sadly, I haven’t shot here yet, but the 2nd street garage is a popular location for rooftop photos. This location is popular for that close up building feel. You’re in the middle of downtown for this location and surrounded by some of the iconic Austin buildings.

3. Austin Skyline Photoshoot at Butler Metro Park

Another location that is easy to use for getting amazing skyline views but isn’t a parking garage is the open field at the Children’s Alliance Garden at Butler Park. There’s a large open field and a hill where you can get great shots of the skyline and even use the right lens to make them feel closer.

Where to park at the Alliance Children’s Garden at Butler Metro Park

The Alliance Children’s Garden has it’s own parking lot, but it is often full and usually requires payment at the meter. Sunday is the day to get free parking throughout the City, but it can be a busy day for the park. Not to mention that weekend times can be harder for capturing images without people in the background. Now, thanks to ai and amazing photoshop tools, it’s pretty easy to get people out of the background but it can take your photographer longer to return your finished set of gallery images due to this extra editing step.
