Turning one is kind of a big deal and when it’s your own child, it feels even more surreal. This colorful milestone session was a celebration of my daughter’s first year around the sun. We kept it simple and sweet: a bright colorful outfit, a white chair for those wobbly big-kid sits, and a whole bunch of cheerful balloons to match her big personality. I chose an outdoor setting with soft light to let the colors really pop, and of course, we followed her lead the entire time. One-year-olds don’t fake joy and that’s exactly why these sessions are so much fun to photograph.

Why I Love First Birthday Sessions Like This

At this age, there’s so much emotion packed into the tiniest expressions. The curiosity, the mischief, the cautious grins… all of it is part of the story. There’s no need for elaborate props or over-the-top setups (unless that’s your thing!). Just give them room to play, a few fun textures or colors, and space for connection and you’ll end up with images that feel timeless.
