6th Street isn’t about one specific backdrop… it’s about exploring downtown Austin with a seasoned photographer by your side. Busy roads, crosswalks, big buildings towering overhead, and street art around every corner make it feel less like a single photo location and more like a walking tour that happens to be full of great backdrops. Classic crosswalk shots, staircases, and pops of color are some of my favorites to grab along the way.
Why Seniors Love 6th Street
It’s probably not your spot if: you’re picturing a quiet, nature-filled session, or you want a guaranteed specific mural (sometimes they change, so I can’t promise what will be there).
From a Photographer’s Perspective
6th Street works well as a full session on its own! We can spend the whole time just walking around downtown and come away with a ton of variety without ever repeating a backdrop. It’s one of the only locations where the walk between shots is just as photogenic as wherever we end up stopping.

What to Know Before You Go
We’ll be doing a lot of walking to explore downtown, so comfortable shoes are a must! This isn’t the session for brand-new never worn before heels. Bring a bag or have someone carry a change of shoes if you want photos in something less practical. I often bring a wagon also so feel free to ask.
Safety note
One more important note: take 6th Street photos during the day only. This isn’t an after-dark hangout for kids. It’s known as ‘Dirty Sixth’ for a reason. During the day, it’s a completely different vibe with all that cool street art and city energy. I always recommend bringing a friend or parent along too.
Best time to shoot on 6th Street
Stick to weekdays if you can because 6th Street gets busy with a party crowd on weekends, even during the day. For lighting, I actually recommend shooting earlier than a typical golden hour which means bumping it up by an hour or more. The buildings downtown block a lot of direct light as the sun gets lower, so waiting for standard golden hour timing here means losing good light faster than you’d expect.
How We’ll Shoot on 6th Street
Since the murals and street art here change often, I don’t have one specific wall I send everyone to which is actually part of the fun. We’ll spend the session walking and exploring downtown together, working with whatever’s we can find. Some examples include: staircases, pops of color, murals, and alleyways with character. What stays constant is the city feeling… busy roads, crosswalks, and big buildings in the background wherever you turn.
